3 min read

Have you ever sit down to imagine what it would be like to be dead and see how people are living their own life? Like you wanna experience how your own ghost will be a stranger to people and see how strange and haunting it would be. It’s like seeing your past life in someone, and everything is playing to you of how you lived your life. Well Mark Mallman has something intriguing for us on his latest single, “Seen My Own Ghost.” A track that comes in as a haunting piece yet introspective exploration of personal growth and the ghosts of our past. Not only does he wants to talk about his past but also took us back to the 80s with his sound on this track.

Now when you hit that play button, you realize how the beats and manner in which the song was sang sounds familiar but very unique and you’re like, ah where have I heard this song before? Well hate to break it to you but that’s an inspiration he drew from Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” but what Mallman did was to infuse the track with retro vibes, where he used familiar synth sounds to create that nostalgic atmosphere which makes you think you’ve heard the song before. Wow, that’s some sort of creativity. The song is beautiful, calm but haunting yet enjoyable, then as the song goes on, you realize how the lyrics touches on themes of reflection and resilience, and the pain and fear to have to confront your past as you navigate through life’s uncertainties. What’s crazy in here is why do you have to confront your past? It’s a ghost now but yet you need to go to it to able to move through this life, meanwhile there may be memories you might have buried with that dead you, and now you need something important from the dead you to be able to get to the next chapter and now you have to talk to your own ghost. Crazy, emotional and very draining, the fear, the pain and what might transpire, us what make song intriguing, but you need to gather the strength and be bold to still move on regardless of whatever the confrontation may bring. Okay so now let’s go back to confront our ghost at the beginning of the song with lines like “seen my own ghost on the side of the road, from the corner of my eye and I drove on by,” this hints at the the fear of what you may discover in your exploration, then the tone and the way Mallman delivered this emotionally signals the sense of uneasiness seeing his own ghost.

Then as the song goes on, you realize how he talks about the moments of heartache, betrayal, and uncertainty, all while navigating the complexities of love and loss. Then lines like “a reminder of the murder you put me through” laying emphasis the pain and emotional turmoil he went through in his past relationships. Then again as you listen you feel the resilience and the growth he’s achieved now. Such a marvelous song, with loads angles to and themes for everyone to relate to. Then you hear the refrain “people gonna lie about anything” hinting at lies and betrayal that can haunt us, even from those we trust the most.

Well this song, “See My Own Ghost” ain’t just your regular song, the way the song was crafted is unmatched, couple with some deep level elite lyrics that just resonates with every listener that plays the song. Then the production and the vibes from the 80s just makes it worth it. It’s a must-listen song that deserves your attention. Mallman really delivered with this one and trust me, the moment you hit play, there’s no going back. So why don’t you go ahead and give this song a good listen while adding to your weekly playlist.
