“LEO” BY DEAD STORM RISING (DSR): A GOTHIC METAL JOURNEY THROUGH INNER TURMOIL AND SOCIAL ANXIETY

3 min read

Sometimes life comes in a different way that it affects people with the way they respond to everything, like a snail in its shell with the fear of not going out so it gets trashed or get stampeded….wait but what forced the snail to go out? Hahaha find out from Dead Storm Rising (DSR), an anonymous Gothic Doom Metal studio project who comes from Seattle, WA, introduces their debut release with a cover of “Leo.” The band consist of Wraith on Guitar/Bass/Drums, Kitsune on Piano/Keyboards/Backup Vox, and Hræsvelgr handling Vocals. They are known for how they focus on atmospheric music and how they adopt personas to enhance their crafts and it’s experience. One thing I must say is, I like the song really well, and love how it pans out with those haunting like atmosphere, haha you are getting itchy don’t worry let’s get going.

Now what do I always tell you about debuts?? Haha crazy, it’s where all the magic happens, the best of craftsmanship and creativity with unmatched energy and vibe that takes listeners by surprise and keep them entertained. This single which is part of a Failure Tribute Compilation by Bitume, demonstrate the band’s ability to transform a neo-punk grunge tune into a Gothic Doom Metal track. The song which was recorded under the looming deadline stands out and really shows how much the band can create and adapt. The band influenced by bands like Paradise Lost, Lacuna Coil, Tool, Type O Negative, and Insomnium, they bring a unique and authentic blend of inspirations to their crafts and that’s why you should give their new one a listen. The beautiful thing is this song was birthed from Wraith’s vision. According to him, it’s a lyrically intense narrative that indicates a person grappling with extreme social anxiety and the challenges of day-to-day life.

The lyrics of the cover of “Leo” talks about the struggles he was going through and how difficult it was to come out of his shell, the anxiety and how problematic it was to communicate. Like I said it was like a snail out of it’s shell, the snail feared if it went out it may get trashed, stampede or devoured, so life was hell and was burnt out. This is what sometimes some of us go through, it’s like we dealing with so much in our life that it becomes difficult that we will share it, cos we fear we may be judged and laughed about. It’s crazy out there and makes it difficult for us to voice out, so everyday we have to deal with our struggles and inner turmoil while navigating through life. You know the most beautiful thing about this song?

The message the song sends and how the song pans out, those haunting atmosphere and vocals adds extra emotions into the song and makes you feel what the Leo was going through growing up. I like how the song opens, those piano tones bringing in a movie like scene that’s about to start fire, then those heavy vocals kicks in with the beats and then gets you glued and hooked to see the track out. It’s a beautiful track that transcends beyond the ears and connects with your soul and propels you into this haunting atmosphere. A masterpiece, bravo DSR, this is a solid 10/10 gothic doom metal piece. You need to experience this song and trust me you will repeat it thereafter.

According to Wraith, the brains behind “Dead Storm Rising,” the band has their original songs in the pipeline but with a looming deadline, “Leo” was released so we can all enjoy what’s to come and to be honest, this sh** really slaps and it really sets the stage for Dead Storm Rising’s journey into the world of Gothic Doom Metal. As we all wait for their original tracks let’s milk this one and enjoy every piece of it. Go ahead and give “Leo” a listen and trust me, it will end up on your favorite playlist. ENJOY!!
